Senior Fall Prevention: Products to Keep Your Patients Safe

Growing old brings numerous significant changes to a person’s body and mind. Hair will turn white or fall out, while and your skin will start to lose suppleness and begin to wrinkle.

The health and well-being of an aging person is always a matter of concern. A person’s sight, hearing, muscle strength would not be the same as before. His coordination and reflexes will decline, and this can worsen with the onset of several diseases that range from bone diseases to diabetes to heart attack.

As a result, older people tend to take more medicines, but sometimes these medications can also cause side effects such as headaches, dizziness and general weakness. These factors can limit an aging person’s mobility, and this can cause them to experience falls more often. Falling can be dangerous as it can lead to injuries or death.

Falls are the one of the leading causes of fatal and non-fatal injuries among seniors (65 years and older). As a result, many seniors are hesitant to get up from their beds or move along on their own because of their fear of falling.

That is why preventing falls is critical. Eating the right diet, taking proper medications, and taking part in many forms of exercises and activities are some of the ways to minimize the risks of falling among senior citizens. There are also devices seniors can use that help prevent them from falling. Kerr Medical offers efficient anti-falling devices, most of which are created by Smart Caregiver, the leading name in anti-falling and anti-wandering solutions for over two decades.

1. Paging Fall Monitor

This is an alarm monitor that can send a wireless signal to a remote caregiver pager (TP-2016P model) or Central Monitor (433-CMU-40 model), both sold separately.

It should be used together with a bed or chair alarm pad, floor mat, or seat belt (all sold separately) of compatible models.

2. Adjustable Height Clamp on Tub Rail

It is a durable height clamp which is constructed of steel and coated with white powder. This clamp can fit most tubs – its length can be adjusted from 14” to 17” while its width can be adjusted from 3” to 7”. It has a stainless steel locking mechanism and non-wearing rubbers which provide scratch-proof security.

3. 12” Suction Cup Grab Bar

The large suction cups ensure a strong hold and are guaranteed not to slip. Installation is quick and easy and does not need special tools. A color bar indicator on the bar shows whether the bar is positioned evenly or needs to be re-positioned to the surface.

4. Couch Cane

The Couch Cane is usually placed on the side of a couch, which provides stable support for a senior person as he or she tries to get up from the seat. It also features a four-pocket pouch for easy access of essentials and other things (such as magazines or a remote control).

5. 16 1/2” Plastic Tub Rail

The ergonomically-designed plastic tub rail provides a safe and comfortable grip for the seniors as he or she tries to get off the bathtub. Installation is quick and easy, and does not need special tools.

6. Adjustable Length Home Style Bed Rail

The rail length can be adjusted from 36” to 72” to fit to most bed sizes. It is designed to prevent accidental falls and to provide an easier and safer way for the seniors to get in and out of bed.

7. Security Pole & Curve Grab Bar

This support bar for tension-mounted so installation is easy and requires no special tools or professional help. It allows seniors to safely stand from a couch, bed or toilet. Manufactured by Stander.

I called with questions and was greeted with very friendly and very helpful staff. The motion detector we bought is probably the best caregiving device we’ve bought so far.
